Minor League Update: 4/11/06

AAA Scranton-WB

  • Carlos Ruiz: 0-4
  • Chris Roberson: 0-2, BB, K, SB, PO
  • Josh Kroeger: N/A
  • Danny Sandoval: 2-4
  • Chris Coste: 0-4, 2 K

Travis Minix: 2.1 IP 1 H 0 ER 0 BB 0 K
Ryan Cameron: 1 IP 1 H 0 ER 0 BB 2 K

No offense, but solid relief work out of Minix and Cameron...with the big league bullpen looking so good thus far, these two guys may be in for another full season at the AAA level - there are worse ways to make a living...

AA Reading

  • Michael Bourn: 2-5, 2 R, SB (8)
  • Tim Moss: 0-5, 3 K
  • Jason Jaramillo: 2-5, 2B, RBI, R, E
  • Bryan Hansen: 0-4, BB, K
  • Angel Chavez: 3-5, HR, 4 RBI, R, 2 K

Scott Mathieson: 6 IP 8 H 6 ER 1 BB 9 K

One of the reasons Scott Mathieson is thought of as such a quality prospect is the strength of his peripheral numbers...9 strikeouts vs. 1 walk in 6 innings of work is encouraging. 6 earned runs allowed is not. His mediocre results just haven't matched up to his stellar peripherals yet...something to keep an eye on with him. Another stolen base for Bourn...one of the newest members of the organization Angel Chavez getting it done...and, last by not least, Tim Moss continues to struggle mightily. After 20 PA's, Moss is hitting .000/.100/.000 with 13 strikeouts. When I said last but not least...maybe I really did mean "least" - those are some ugly, ugly numbers. It's early though, right?

High A Clearwater

  • Mike Costanzo: 1-4, 2B, RBI, BB, K
  • Brad Harman: 2-4, 2 RBI

Cole Hamels: 5 IP 2 H 0 ER 2 BB 9 K, balk
Chris Booker: 2 IP 1 H 1 ER 1 BB 3 K, wild pitch

Homer Bailey (Reds): 5.2 IP 7 H 3 ER 0 BB 5 K

The best pitching matchup of the night throughout the minors was easily the Hamels-Bailey showdown in Sarasota. Hamels got the better of the Reds top prospect and looked great in doing so. He's pitched 11 shutout innings so far this year with 16 strikeouts, 2 walks, and just 5 hits allowed. So far, so good. By the way, Costanzo is hitting .308/.333/.528 and Harman is at .273/.304/.318 for the season thus far.

Low A Lakewood

Greg Golson: 1-4, R
Tim Kennelly: 0-4, 2 K
Welinson Baez: 0-4, K
Lou Marson: N/A

Scott Mitchinson (L, 0-1): 4 IP 4 H 3 ER 1 BB 3 K
Andy Barb: 4 IP 1 H 0 ER 0 BB 4 K

Another game, another weak night of hitting for Lakewood. At what point does the total lack of run support begin to adversely affect the collective psyche of the BlueClaws starting pitching?
